Giant Otway Odyssey Mountain Bike Marathon
LOCATION: Forrest (Great Otway National Park), South-West Victoria
RACE FORMATS: Giant Odyssey 100km - Giant Shorty 50km - New Giant Rookie 30km - New Giant Pioneer 15km - New Giant Grommets fun riding for (little) kids.
Coming into its 10th year, the Giant Odyssey is Australia’s most respected mountain bike marathon thanks to the quantity of epic single track, the lung busting hills and blitzing descents, the electrifying race atmosphere and sense of satisfaction you get when you finish in the middle of the massive event festival. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2016 edition.
By popular vote the format of the 2016 Giant Odyssey will be the same as 2015 and earlier years with the same 100km and 50km courses and the event starting and finishing at Forrest . But NEW for 2016 will be the medium distance 30km Giant Rookie event – a race that’s custom designed for MTB newcomers and those not quite up to 50km. Other evolutions mean that the Giant Pioneer will be shortened from 15km to 10km to be even more welcoming to kids and we are including a new Grommets Ride for little kids on balance bikes around the Forrest Footy Ground.

Winter Wild Apollo Bay
Embrace the elements of the southern Otways, when a new after-dark festival sparks up over four wintery weekends across July and August. The first WinterWild will revel in the untamed side of Apollo Bay. Don’t look away.
Inspired by the elements of earth, water, air and fire – and informed by the history of Apollo Bay - the 18 years and over festival takes place over four weekends to highlight various art forms: music, street theatre, film and storytelling.
When the sun-seeking, shell-collecting crowds have deserted the place where the forest meets the sea, Apollo Bay is “less Summer Bay, more Deadwood”, said festival director Roderick Poole.
- Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay, VIC 3233

JULY 2017 ~ Saturday 1 > Saturday 1 July
Winter Wild Apollo Bay - Water: 8pm
Water is the original source of life. Many creation myths begin with emergence from Water. The oceans are vast and primal and lap at Apollo Bay’s doorstep. The first white people came here over Water. For decades this was the only way. It was a dangerous journey and left the coast littered with shipwrecks. It is Water that draws people here still.

Dirt River Radio - Free Live Music at The Brewhouse: 9.30pm
You may have been lucky enough to catch this awesome band at the Apollo Bay Music Festival in years gone by. We are super pumped to be bringing Dirt River Radio (aka The Dirties) back to the Bay for a cracking night.
These guys are a six piece band from Melbourne known for heartfelt Australian rock ballads cranked with Rock-a-Billy swagger, Gypsy Romps, Celtic sea shanties and smoldering dirty Soul.
With a line-up of two guitars, bass, drums and the magnificent `Dirtettes’ on backing vocals, ‘The Dirties’ have evolved from humble St Kilda beginnings into a world class rock n roll outfit (two European tours under the abnds belts). The bands classic sound will deliver to you a swag of heartfelt tunes and at times brutal snapshots of reality, also renowned for a wildly volatile, no punches pulled live shows and when you get to know them, true gang mentality.
2017 see’s their best incarnation yet with members from Electric Mary and 28 Days third album, ‘Sun City White’ (out Apr 29th) explores issues spanning from personal demons to the plight of humanity.

FINUCANE & SMITH IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HER MAJESTY’S BALLARAT
In 1855 the wildest showgirl Lola Montez toured Australia. The scandal is legend.
From Patrick White Playwright Award winner Jackie Smith and world-famous cabaret stars Finucane & Smith comes the story of one of the world’s most adventurous women.
Lola Montez horse-whipped the editor of the Ballarat Times – for a bad review.
Swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand.
Escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels.
Showered with gold nuggets and insults.
Swathed in scandal.
Her erotic Spider Dance was “the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on the public stage (Sydney Morning Herald 1855)
Starring triple Green Room Award winner of Best Actress Miss Caroline Lee (a direct descendant of Lola), who will be joined on stage by Parisian dance siren Holly Durant in a wildly contemporary dreamscape steeped in Australian history.
“There’s really no adequate way of explaining these spectaculars to those yet to witness one, and those who haven’t won’t forget in a hurry…seductive, subversive ad bursting at the seams with monstrous talent" The Age

Entries have opened for Australia’s most respected mountain bike marathon, The Otway Odyssey presented by Focus which will see two new gravel road races added in 2017 line-up over the weekend of 24th-25th February.
For ten years, riders have travelled to the famous Otway rainforest of Forrest in south-western Victoria to take on the region’s iconic single track, but in 2017 even more riders can be part of the action with the addition of the Great Otway Gravel Grind (The GOGG) to the schedule of events.
A Gravel Grind is an event held on unsealed 2WD roads and the Otway Ranges around Forrest are infused with these, making for some superb riding on traffic free roads through the wilderness. The GOGG will include 49km and 97km options that make them achievable for all styles of rider on either road bikes, cyclocross, mountain or hybrid bikes.
The action gets underway on Saturday 24th February with the principle mountain bike races; the 100km Odyssey, the 50km Shorty and the 30km Rookie, all starting and finishing amidst a huge bike expo and food festival at the Forrest Football Ground. The GOGG races and the kids 10km Pioneer MTB will be held on Sunday 25th February.
The Otway Odyssey MTB Marathons have been held for the last 10 years and have grown to become the pre-eminent mountain bike races in Australia and on the bucket list for many cyclists. The courses are well known for their tough climbs and technical trails, but also for the friendliness on course and the race atmosphere around the Forrest Football Ground expo area.
All courses of the Otway Odyssey take advantage of the extensive network of single track and 2WD roads of Forrest and the Otways. Combined with the beauty on offer in the Great Otway National Park, the electrifying race atmosphere and sense of satisfaction you get when you finish in the middle of the massive event festival, it’s an event not to be missed.

Avid lovers of chamber music, guitar aficionados as well as concert first timers will no doubt be left captivated and fascinated by MGQ’s inimitable re-workings of established classics and feel invigorated by more recent and newly commissioned works. Guitar performance is set to transform as MGQ embarks upon a voyage of exploring the world of guitar as you have never heard it before.

7 Sladen Street, Birregurra 3242
After wowing us on the Blues Train at Queenscliff Festival in 2017, Bec Goring is coming to Birregurra to treat us with her own style of music that blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz.
An electrifying guitarist and singer reminiscent of Mia Dyson, Bec is bringing along a few of her favourite musos to accompany her as she pays subtle homage to many soul and blues artists.
Sweet vocals backed by a never-ending bag of blues infused riffery, eloquent harmonies whilst maintaining a striking contrast among songs. It's not at all surprising that audiences are spinning her single release 'Weekend' like fairy floss from a candy store.
Bec comes to Birregurra with some of her favourite musos to accompany her. Standby to be blown away by this emerging up-comer. Once again, we're getting in before she hits the heights

2018 WinterWild announcement. Apollo Bay’s newest arts festival will be running on the following dates:10-12 August, 24-26th August.
Just as darkness set in, it commenced to blow and rain in torrents, the wind made the fire and the smoke twist and turn in all directions. The noise of the tremendous trees roaring and cracking, the rain coming in at points of the roof made me shudder… Had it not been for some brandy and water I found … I don’t know what may have been the consequences. Don’t Look Away.

BIRREGURRA MUSIC SALON PRESENTS JESS FAIRLIE
BIRREGURRA MUSIC SALON PRESENTS JESS FAIRLIE
|
|
|
|
7 Sladen Street, Birregurra 3242
A quick venture into newfound Melbourne pop prodigy Jess Fairlie's stirring and straight-forward 'Senses' immediately evokes R&B by-lines of old. Inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder and modern heroes like Regina Spektor, Fairlie finds effortless beauty in her debut single, which is sure to create some positive buzz for the contemporary pop community.
Fairlie's ballad, behind the empowering piano and rousing vocals, is an endearing simple song of love and distance, as she realizes, "I'll just stay here as your friend/Hoping that you come to your senses." While the territory is familiar, the execution sounds like it's from an industry vet - not someone completely brand new to the scene.
Listen to 'Senses' below and look out for Fairlie's upcoming self-titled EP

Welcome to the town of Grinalong! Grinalong was once famous for the car race, The Grinalong Classic.
Fifty years ago the race stopped when a wolf that lived in nearby Tangled Woods destroyed racing cars and the drivers fled in terror. Now, the new Mayor has a plan to bring back Grinalong’s glory days, and re-launches the race. But it soon becomes obvious that he is more interested in furthering his own ambitions and lining his pockets than helping the town. And he doesn’t mind hurting Red and Gran in the process.

Forest Bathing and Shamanic Drum Journey
Date And Time
Sun. 20 January 20199:30 am – 1:00 pm AEDT
Location
The Source, Otways1255 Skenes Creek RdTanybryn, Vic 3249
A magical experience of Forest Bathing (Shinrin Yoku) and a Shamanic Drum Journey in the heart of ancient Otways rainforest with secluded waterfalls, on a private property of The Source, Otways. Experience a deeply nourishing, powerful and transformational spiritual nature emersion!
Shamanism is the oldest known cross-cultural spiritual practice, dating back over 100,000 years, and predating all known religions. It's a nature-based spirituality that brings us into harmony with nature and all its creations, in both seen and unseen world. Shamanic practices and rituals offer connection, healing, empowerment, insights and guidance to us for a more soul-directed, meaningful and fulfilling life.
Shamanic Drum Journey enables us to metaphysically travel to Shamanic realms, to work on the spiritual/energetic level with the intention to create positive changes in our physical reality. My medicine drum will take you on a Journey to connect with your Power Animal to gather knowledge and guidance for challenges or questions you are confronted with in your daily life. This is a safe and relaxing experience that offers very powerful and profound insights and results (if you decide to put the insight into practice). After the Drum Journey we will sit in Circle to share our experiences, integrate our learnings and set intentions.
What you will get:
- be guided on a mediation to open and expand your sensory awareness, body connection and grounding to experience more fully the pristine nature of The Source, Otways
- follow the meadering walking tracks, decks, bridges and stairs through a totally secluded ancient rainforest and three waterfalls (including a Grotto!) that emit incredible vibrational energy
- experience 3 Shamanic Drum Journeys and Circle for spiritual insights
- connect with your self on a whole new level
- meet other like-minded people
- enjoy healthy refreshments at the Forest Pavilion, suspended over a crystal clear rainforest creek

Evan Goldman is about to turn thirteen, and he can't wait. His life seems full of possibilities - that is, until his parents get divorced, and he is forced to move with his mom from big-city New York to backwater Appleton, Indiana. If Evan can't get the coolest kids to come to his bar mitzvah, how is he going to survive the school year, not to mention the rest of his life?
As Evan navigates the world of cool kids and nerds, jocks and cheerleaders, first kisses and heartbreak, he comes to understand "What it Means to Be a Friend."
With a bright, catchy pop score from Jason Robert Brown, equal doses of humour and pathos, and a cast of wildly talented teens, 13 is irresistible to grown ups and almost-grown ups alike.

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel: 6.30pm
Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel
Kleopatra VII, the last ruler of the mighty Ptolemaic Empire, is one of the most instantly recognisable figures from antiquity. Her deeds or legends, legacy and identity are debated around the world. The image that predominates is of a beautiful, extravagant seductress, often clad—if clothed—in very little at all, and played by Elizabeth Taylor (or Vivien Leigh).
But what did ancient historians and archaeologists know about the “real” Kleopatra? Building on surviving literature, everyday texts preserved on papyrus, sculpture, coinage, and more, we will view Kleopatra as ruler of a vast, still-powerful monarchy and associated bureaucracy, as a powerful woman in a time of nearly unbridled patriarchy, as a survivor in a real-life “game of thrones,” and as a target of vicious Roman propaganda blaming her for the outbreak of war between Augustus and Marc Antony. How was she remembered by a Roman culture that hated and was captivated by her, and by later works - mediaeval Islamic scholars, Renaissance painters, and modern filmmakers? In short: once we strip away the layers of confusion, misogyny, and legend, who really was Kleopatra?
…
Andrew Connor is the Lecturer in Ancient History in the Centre for Ancient Cultures at Monash University. His work focuses on the temples of Roman Egypt - their economic infrastructure, relationship with the Roman state, and eventual collapse in the 3rd century CE. He completed his PhD in Ancient History in the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati, and taught at the Cincinnati and Xavier University before heading to Australia. He currently teaches Roman, Classical Greek, and Hellenistic history and archaeology, along with Greek and Latin language, at the 1st year through Honours levels. He publishes editions of documentary texts preserved on papyri on topics from the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine periods in Egypt. He lives in Elwood, and in his free time is a member of the Port Melbourne Football Club.
The meeting opens at 6.30pm to allow you to place your food order and be seated for Andrew to commence at 7pm. The Hotel offers a fixed price menu of $20 but you may order from the regular menu. Pink bowls are on each table for donations. Donations are optional but all received are distributed back into the local community.
This event is open to everybody. If you would like to attend, please contact Margaret Murphy by email or phone (03) 5237 6640.

2019 Anzac Day Mushroom Hunt
· Hosted by Gellibrand Community House
Fungi delight and intrigue and provide the connective network of terrestrial ecosystems. The forests surrounding Gellibrand harbour some of the most diverse and bizarre fungi in the state.
This workshop introduces participants to the diversity, ecology and curiosities of the Kingdom Fungi, specific to fungi found in the Otways region but also within wider Australian and global contexts.
It will include a ninety-minute interactive session on the basics of fungus identification where participants will get to handle, examine and identify various fungi. Participants will also learn to recognise the various diagnostic characteristics used to identify fungi in the field. Fungi will be discussed in regard to their ecological roles and also cultural aspects such as edibility and toxicity.
We will then partake in an exciting two hour foray through various local ecosystems to search for species of interest.
Supplementary notes are also provided. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own specimens for identification at the workshop.
